ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Kerstin Behnke (Foto: Hartmut Schirmacher)

In April, 2017 Kerstin Behnke succeeded Florian Helgath as choral director of the via-nova-chor Munich.

Kerstin Behnke is professor of choir conducting at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar. She is also artistic director of the Kammerchor TONIKUM in Berlin. Till 2018 she conducted the LandesJugendChor Saar.

She is a sought-after guest conductor throughout Germany as well as abroad. In 2009, she conducted the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Tokio and in 2012, she was the first to perform Brahms' German Requiem in the State Theater Panama. Among the many choirs and orchestras Kerstin Behnke has worked with are the Kammersymphonie Berlin, Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg, the Brandenburger Symphoniker and the Berliner Sinfonie-Orchester. She has also lead rehearsals for the RIAS-Kammerchor Berlin. For many years Kerstin Behnke was director of Berliner Cappella. Under her direction, the choir premiered numerous oratorical works in the big concert halls of Berlin.

Kerstin Behnke’s work as a conductor is on linking musical and extra-musical material thematically, thereby establishing new connections and making them accessible to experience. The venues are integral parts of the events: outside the concert hall, music enters into dialogue with its new surroundings; in the concert hall, extra-musical elements lead beyond the traditional boundaries of a musical performance.
